Easter is Coming

With God, all things are possible. - Matthew 19:26“It's Friday, but Sunday's a comin'!”

This is a phrase repeated over and over in a well-known writing by Rev. Lowell Streiker.  It acknowledges the genuine struggles of life, and yet raises the reality of our God's grace.

“It's Friday,” points to Good Friday when our Lord willingly took up the Cross and took on death and sin, pain and grief.

Evil had its way.  Death surrounded life.  All seemed lost.

No one escapes from life without their Good Fridays.

Sometimes the pain we experience is almost unbearable.  Sometimes the sorrow is so great, it is as if our heart is broken into fragments.  Sometimes the burden of suffering is so heavy, we cannot see any way out.  Life can be so hard, death so prominent.

“but Sunday's a comin'!”

When it looked the darkest and evil had won, Christ comes alive.  Jesus is raised from the dead.  Reality is re-visited.  Death is swallowed up.  In a death-denying culture, we have a death-defying God.  Love wins!  God is God over all.

We are an Easter people.  God Easters in us.  We are a resurrection people.  We are people of hope, of new beginnings, of new possibilities.  God Easters!

And Easter joyfully demands a response by those fully alive.  We are graced to serve.  Martin Luther defined our Christian calling and our shared ministry:

“Through Christ's love, we are to be changed and to make the infirmity of others our own; we are to take upon ourselves their form and their necessity, and all the good that is within our power, we are to make theirs, that they may profit from it.  We are changed into one another and are made a community of love.”

Mosaic experiences new life often.  The people we support and those who love them face a multitude of challenges; discouragement and disappointment can far too often reign.

And yet, in God's grace, together life is lived to its fullest.  Each day, amidst struggles, life abounds.  Lives are resurrected.  Hope lives.

God Easters anew!
